"Air humidity in museums and libraries" white paper

Almost all works of art, artefacts and documents stored in museums and libraries are made from natural materials that are sensitive to the humidity in the environment where they are kept. Canvas, wood, parchment and paper have a moisture content that tends to reach equilibrium with the humidity in the surrounding air. Variations in room temperature and humidity may modify the dimensions and mechanical properties of these materials, causing irreversible damage to paintings, manuscripts and other works of art.
To conserve old objects perfectly intact, museums and libraries therefore need to guarantee specific ambient conditions, with precision and over very long periods of time.
